FOOD

Hunger is a serious issue that affects millions of people around the world. In the United States, poverty and inflation are the root causes of hunger, and many families struggle to provide even one meal a day. No human being should die from starvation when there is so much food waste in the country. According to the USDA, restaurants and grocery stores throw out 25 million tons of food each year. Redirecting even just 15% of this waste could halve the number of food-insecure people in the United States.

SCAN is committed to ending this crisis. With a focus on providing education, resources, and empowerment to local farmers in Africa, SCAN is working to create conditions that allow them to grow more food, feed more people, and share their knowledge with others. By elevating the value of farmers in society, providing them with the tools and resources they need, and investing in their farms, families, and health, SCAN is helping to end hunger in Africa.

SCAN not only focuses on ensuring that people are getting at least one meal a day but also on what they are eating. Many people today are dying from diseases due to their diets, which often consist of GMOs, harsh chemicals, and animal products. SCAN is working to provide nutritious and healthy food to those in need. We focus on children who are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition and related illnesses.

Every year 3.2 million children under 5 die, with 1 in 8 kids at risk for hunger. Black and Latino children are more likely to face hunger than white children due to systemic racial injustice. Food insecurity rates are highest for single-mother households and households with incomes below the poverty line. SCAN is committed to helping these children, providing them with healthy and nutritious food, and teaching them how to grow food naturally.

Poor-quality diets are one of the obstacles children face when it comes to survival and healthy development. In the first two years of life, malnutrition can cause irreparable damage to a child's rapidly growing body and brain. Wasting, or “low weight for height’’ carries a higher risk of death if not treated properly, and stunting, or “low height for age” prevents children from reaching their full potential. SCAN aims to address these issues by providing education and resources to parents and caregivers, teaching them about the importance of a healthy diet and its impact on a child's development.

In conclusion, SCAN is an organization that is committed to ending hunger and malnutrition around the world, with a focus on children and families in need. By providing education, resources, empowerment, and investment to local farmers in Africa and working to redirect food waste in the United States, SCAN is making a real difference in the lives of those who are most vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition. By working together, we can help create a world where everyone has access to healthy and nutritious food and no one has to go hungry.

Health

Health is a fundamental human right that must be accessible to all, regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, access to adequate healthcare remains a significant challenge in many parts of the world, including the United States and Africa.

In the United States, access to healthcare is a major concern for many low-income families. According to the US Census Bureau, approximately 9% of the US population, or 28 million people, were uninsured in 2019. This lack of insurance coverage leads to significant disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, with uninsured individuals less likely to receive preventive care and more likely to experience poor health outcomes.

Saving Children Across Nations (SCAN) is working to bridge this gap by providing access to affordable healthcare services to children and families in need. Through partnerships with healthcare providers and community organizations, SCAN is able to provide medical care, medications, and other healthcare services to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

In Africa, the healthcare system faces even more significant challenges. The lack of proper equipment, medication, and healthcare facilities contributes to a high rate of preventable deaths across the continent. Women and children are particularly vulnerable, with maternal and infant mortality rates among the highest in the world. Additionally, unsanitary living conditions and environmental degradation contribute to the spread of infectious diseases, further worsening the health crisis.

SCAN recognizes the urgent need to improve access to healthcare in Africa. Through partnerships with local healthcare providers and organizations, SCAN is working to address these challenges by providing medical care, medications, and other healthcare services to those who need them most. Additionally, SCAN is focused on educating communities about the importance of sanitation, hygiene, and preventive care to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

One of the key ways SCAN is making a difference in healthcare is through environmental education. By educating students about the impact of human activities on the environment, SCAN is helping to raise awareness about the connection between environmental health and human health. This knowledge is essential for taking mitigative actions to minimize loss of life and property.

Another way SCAN is addressing healthcare challenges is by recruiting and training healthcare workers. Through partnerships with healthcare providers and organizations, environmental education, healthcare worker training, and sanitation initiatives, SCAN is helping to ensure that healthcare workers are equipped with the skills and resources they need to provide quality care to those who need it most. This is essential for improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities.

Finally, SCAN is working to improve sanitation and hygiene practices in communities around the world. Too many preventable diseases go untreated or misdiagnosed because families cannot access adequate and affordable care. By providing access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education, SCAN is helping to reduce the spread of infectious diseases and improve public health.

SCAN is committed to improving healthcare access for children and families in need around the world. Together, we can create a healthier and more equitable world for all.
